If there’s one group in the world that cares about the U.S. election even more than Americans themselves, it’s probably the Chinese. In fact, everyone in our Shanghai office was holding their breath and anxiously watching their screens as Trump was announced the new U.S. president around 4 p.m. Beijing time. Personally, I found China’s spokesperson Mao Ning’s comment quite intriguing: We respect the choice of the American people. It reminded me strongly of a meme trending on social media that says, I respect your choice though I hardly understand it.
While our team is working on a piece outlining major perspectives in Chinese academia on Trump’s victory and future U.S.-China relations ( coming out tomorrow) , we’re pleased to share this video we made previously, which uses scenario planning to envision a world after the U.S. election.
